Buick_logo_768x500_o.jpgYou may know that the Buick brand is a part of General Motors, but did you know that it's been a key part of this company for far longer than most people would expect? Let's answer the question “When did GM buy Buick?” and explore the impact of this shift in automotive history.

When Did GM Buy Buick?

As we said above, the Buick brand was bought relatively early on. In fact, Buick was one of the very first automakers around, and it was bought up by General Motors as companies scrambled to get in on a new market that was sure to be lucrative.

William Durant formed General Motors in Flint, Michigan in 1908. One of his first moves that year was the purchase of Buick, another company that he had helped form.

On October 1, 1908, the brand was acquired, and General Motors went on to purchase a number of other automakers. Those purchases went on to form several brands we’re sure you've heard of, including Oldsmobile and Cadillac.

From the 1930s and onward, the Buick brand was primarily made to sell luxury vehicles. These cars were meant to slot in somewhere between the General Motors brand models and the Cadillac luxury vehicles.

Buick still sells premium vehicles today, moving more than one million units per year. The biggest market for the Buick brand is now China, but North America is still a big source of sales.
