At Bob King Buick GMC, we pride ourselves on our wide selection of reliable vehicles, both new and used. While finding used cars with as few miles as possible is theoretically ideal, mileage shouldn’t be your only focus.
Here’s an overview of what to look out for when considering high mileage used cars.
Productive Miles & Consistent Maintenance
In decades past, a used car with more than 100,000 miles on the odometer was considered an uncertain prospect. These days, most engines are engineered to last for much longer than 100,000 miles.
You’ll want to find out how many of those miles were tallied in the city versus on the highway. Recent models tend to do better on highways, which are much gentler on your engine than the constant stop and start of city driving.
Long commutes and drives give the engine ample lubrication, and more opportunities to burn off built-up carbon.
Also, make sure the vehicle you’re looking has had consistent service. Oil changes are the most important, but there are many other service milestones to consider.
Red Flags & Service Inspection
Ask your dealer about your vehicle history report options. Some red flags on a vehicle history report include whether or the not the car has been in a moderate-to-serious accident or is a salvaged vehicle.
Be sure to get a list of all previous owners, and then have it inspected by qualified service professionals. A well-maintained high mileage vehicle could last for years and years under the right circumstances.
